“Micah,” my mother calls from downstairs.

I walk to the kitchen as my mom tells me to grab my apron and help her prepare dinner. “You need to learn how to cook, Micah. You might get so unlucky and meet a girl who can’t.” She winks as she gives me my instructions. My sister is downstairs, setting the table for dinner. Soon, the smell of fresh seafood and spices from my mom’s famous paella fills the house. When my father’s home, my mom makes it mandatory for us to all have family dinner. I help bring out the food and we say grace and start to enjoy.

“Get packed, we leave tomorrow for the run,” my father informs me. My eyes light up like it’s Christmas.

“Up to Nevada?”

“Yeah. I’m going to need you to catch on to this life real fast,” my father answers as he enjoys his food.

“How long will you be gone?” my mother asks.

“Couple of days,” he replies.

“Will you have cellphone reception?” Sienna questions.

“Yeah.” My father chuckles. “But you know who to call.” He smiles. Some of the bikers my dad trusts fall back and protect the family. Or if shit really goes down, we call my Uncle Blaze.

“So, what does Keria think about you leaving . . . or should I say Venessa? You know, I just can’t keep track?” Sienna’s smart-ass mouth says.

“Sienna,” my father reprimands.

“What?” Sienna bangs her water on the table. “I have the right to protect my best friend.”

“Keria and I are not together,” I reaffirm. “And Venessa knows the deal.”

“Yeah, alright.” She rolls her eyes.
